Start out by just getting your puppy used to having his/her hair pulled into a topknot. Take a small band and wrap it 3-4 times around a small patch of hair from the top of the head. Use a piece approximately 1 inch around.
Once you have the band wrapped, look at your dogs eyes. If they are slanted or you see white from the top of their eyes, the topknot is too tight. Loosen it up a bit by pulling the hair from under the band loose a little bit.
Let you puppy wear just the topnot without a bow for a week or two so he will get used to it.
You will need to re-do the topknot at least 1 time a day to pull up the loose hairs. When you re-do the topknot, snip the old band out with a small pair of scissors rather than pulling it out for re-use. This will prevent broken hair and pulling hair out when you pull the band out. Re-doing the topknot every day will get your dog used to you touching and fixing the topknot so when you start putting bows in, he won't be wiggling around so much.
I suggest putting the band from the bow over the topknot band and wrapping about 3 times over it for a secure hold. You can then add another plain band over the bow band for an even better hold.
If you plan on using a barrette bow, you will also need to put a banded topknot in place before placing the barrette on the topknot. Place the barrette in front of the band in the hair next to the scalp. If you place the barrette in the hair on top of the band, it will slide out.
If you are not familiar with using bows on dogs, you might want to order a bow with bands and a bow with a barrette just to see whch one your more comfortable with and what one works best for you and your dog.
